What to do there
The beaches of the Smiling Coast
Kotu, Kololi, Bijilo or the wilder Sanyang: golden sand, Atlantic waters and colourful pirogues coming in from fishing. Beach restaurants, swimming and lazing along the tourist coast.
Kunta Kinteh Island (UNESCO)
Head up the river by boat through the mangroves to the ruins of the fort on Kunta Kinteh Island, a key site of the slave trade, with a stop at Juffureh village and the Albreda museum. A moving page of history.
Gambia River cruise and wildlife
The Gambia River runs the length of the country: pirogue trips to spot hippos, crocodiles, monkeys and exceptional birdlife in the wetlands and River Gambia National Park.
Birdwatching
With over 500 species, The Gambia is a birder's paradise. Abuko Nature Reserve, the Bijilo sacred forest and the riverbanks teem with colourful birds, accessible with a local guide.
Banjul, Arch 22 and Albert Market
The capital offers Arch 22 (an iconic monument with panoramic views and a small museum) and Albert Market, the country's largest, brimming with fabrics, crafts and fresh produce.
