Myanmar (Burma)
Golden pagodas and temple-strewn plains, in a wounded land
Myanmar, formerly Burma, holds some of Asia's most haunting spiritual landscapes: the thousands of temples of Bagan at sunrise, Yangon's shimmering Shwedagon Pagoda, the lake villages of Inle. But since the 2021 military coup, the country has been plunged into a civil war that controls vast swathes of territory. Travel here is now a weighty decision, to be considered only with a sharp awareness of the risks.
The visa, step by step
How to apply
Apply on the official government e-visa portal: account, form, photo, supporting documents, card payment. The approval letter is sent by email.
Required documents
- Ordinary passport valid at least 6 months
- Recent color photo (4.6 × 3.8 cm, less than 3 months old)
- Confirmed round-trip or onward flight ticket
- Hotel booking covering the whole stay
Good to know
- •The e-visa approval letter is valid for 90 days from issue; beyond that, entry is denied.
- •The tourist e-visa is single entry only.
- •MAJOR SECURITY WARNING: Myanmar is rated 'do not travel' (level 4) by almost all governments due to civil war, airstrikes, landmines and arbitrary detentions.
- •The military has lost control of large parts of the territory; front lines shift weekly.
- •If you travel anyway, stay on the Yangon–Mandalay–Bagan–Inle Lake circuit and expect numerous military checkpoints.
- •Insurance and consular assistance are nearly nonexistent; international banking does not work — bring USD in cash.
