Libya
Spectacular Roman ruins, but a country at war: travel strongly discouraged.
Libya holds some of the Mediterranean's most impressive ancient sites (Leptis Magna, Sabratha, Cyrene) and a magnificent Sahara. But let's be clear: since 2011 the country has remained split between rival governments and armed militias. Every major government formally advises against all travel. An e-Visa officially exists, but independent tourism is banned: only a trip arranged by a licensed tour operator, with a local sponsor and a police escort, is even conceivable — and even then, the risk stays very high.
The visa, step by step
How to apply
The e-Visa launched in March 2024 (evisa.gov.ly portal), but in practice independent tourism is NOT allowed: you must go through a licensed Libyan tour operator who secures an invitation letter/visa and arranges the mandatory tourism-police escort. Start the process several weeks ahead via the agency.
Required documents
- Passport valid 6 months + blank pages
- Invitation letter / sponsor from a licensed tour operator
- Organised tour booking
- Passport photo
- No Israeli stamp/visa (entry refused otherwise)
Good to know
- •All major governments (US, UK, Canada, Australia, France) formally advise against ALL travel to Libya.
- •Independent tourism banned: local sponsor, tour operator and tourism-police escort are mandatory.
- •Carry at least 1,000 Libyan dinars in cash on arrival for a tourist stay.
- •Any Israeli stamp or visa in the passport leads to refused entry.
