Guinea-Bissau
The Atlantic's secret archipelago and its saltwater hippos
A small Portuguese-speaking country tucked between Senegal and Guinea, Guinea-Bissau is one of West Africa's last secrets. Its crown jewel: the Bijagós Archipelago, 88 islands listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, home to astonishing saltwater hippos, sea turtles and deserted beaches. Bissau, the capital, blends Portuguese colonial ruins, gumbé music and lively markets. A raw, authentic, off-the-beaten-path destination.
