Equatorial Guinea
Spanish-speaking Africa: Malabo on its volcanic island, 40 min from Douala.
An immediate neighbour of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea is a curiosity: the only country in Africa where Spanish is spoken. Its capital Malabo, perched on the volcanic island of Bioko, blends Spanish colonial architecture, black-sand beaches and Pico Basile towering over the ocean. For a Cameroonian, it's the fastest escape there is: barely 40 minutes' flight from Douala, same CFA franc, same time. A CEMAC country, Equatorial Guinea in principle waives the visa for Cameroonian nationals. It's still an off-the-radar destination, at times bureaucratic, but one that rewards the curious traveller with a total change of scenery and spectacular nature between forest, volcano and beaches.
The visa, step by step
How to apply
In principle no steps for CEMAC nationals holding a biometric passport: visa-free entry. Present passport and vaccination booklet. As CEMAC enforcement remains uneven, reconfirm before departure.
Required documents
- Biometric passport valid 6 months
- Round-trip ticket
- Yellow fever certificate
- Proof of accommodation
Good to know
- •Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea are CEMAC members: free movement of people on a biometric passport (since Oct. 2017).
- •Without a biometric passport, Equatorial Guinea requires an e-visa (~USD 75, proof of funds ~USD 2,000).
- •Checks can be strict and bureaucratic: reconfirm with the embassy before travelling.
A one-week budget
Round-trip flight from Douala / Yaoundé
180 000 FCFA–450 000 FCFADouala–Malabo: direct flight of about 40 min (Ethiopian Airlines, Cronos/Ceiba and regional carriers). Short flights but expensive lodging (oil economy).
Indicative round-trip price: it varies widely by season, layover and how early you book.
