Djibouti
Salt lakes, whale sharks and lunar landscapes of the Horn
A strategic crossroads between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, Djibouti packs in extreme landscapes. Here lies Lake Assal, Africa's lowest point and one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, as well as Lake Abbé with its limestone chimneys straight out of another planet. Offshore, in the Gulf of Tadjoura, you can swim with majestic whale sharks from November to February. A small French- and Arabic-speaking country, Djibouti appeals to lovers of adventure, diving and wide-open spaces.
